The Quebec Carnival is probably the most well-known North American winter event, and has been popular since the beginning of the 20th century. Quebec City is situated on the St Lawrence River. The winter climate is very severe, and at carnival time people must dress very warmly and cannot stand around and watch the parades for long. It is similar to Harbin in climate and also has ice sculpture competitions that are very popular. The carnival has a very energetic atmosphere, as people take part in various kinds of races and competitions.

Do we have our own Valentine’s Day in
China?
Qiqiao Festival refers to the seventh night of the seventh lunar month. It is a traditional folk festival of the Han people. This night is not only the time when the legendary Cowherd and the Girl Weaver are supposed to have their annual meeting, but also a good opportunity for women to pray for the Girl Weaver for the purpose of seeking dexterity. Therefore, this festival is also named Maiden’s Day, Daughter’s Day. The day is not as well-known as many other Chinese festivals. But almost everyone in China, young or old, is very familiar with the story behind it. Qiqiao Festival is considered by
many as the Chinese Valentine’s Day.
每年农历七月初七这一天是我国汉族的传统节日七夕节。因为此日活动的主要参与者是少女，而节日活动的内容又是以乞巧为主，故而人们称这天为“乞巧节”或“少女节”、“女儿节”。
七夕节是我国传统节日中最具浪漫色彩的一个节日，也是过去姑娘们最为重视的日子。在这一天晚上，妇女们穿针乞巧，祈祷福禄寿活动，礼拜七姐，仪式虔诚而隆重，陈列花果、女红，各式家具、用具都精美小巧、惹人喜爱。
2006年5月20日，七夕节被国务院列入第一批国家非物质文化遗产名录。现又被认为是“中国情人节”。
七夕坐看牵牛织女星，是民间的习俗。相传，在每年农历七月初七的夜晚，是天上织女与牛郎在鹊桥相会之时。
织女是一个美丽聪明、心灵手巧的仙女，凡间的妇女便在这一天晚上向她乞求智慧和巧艺，也少不了向她求赐美满姻缘，所以七月初七也被称为乞巧节。
